Last day in Rome! We made this one count. We just walked around to sites with not much idea of what to expect. More or less the one site that was on the list was the Pantheon, everything else was improvised to great effect.

The Pantheon

This thing was constructed in the 2nd century and is still open for business! It really looks quite rough around the edges, with a lot of improvised fixes. I just marvel at how dedicated they are to keeping this building open. It must cost a fortune. It was a Roman temple, but since 600 it’s been a Catholic church. We didn’t actually go inside.

Church: Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola

We dropped into each one of these churches, grabbed some images, and left.

A Plaza: Piazza Navona

Church #2 – Not sure what the name is

A Castle: Castel Sant’Angelo

This was a brilliant find. Castel Sant’Angelo is the castle that the people in the Vatican (priests, etc) escape to in case of attack. Over the history of Rome the city had been ransacked some times. The picture windows at the top of the castle are so that the Pope can still give addresses from the castle.

Church #3: Basilica di Sant’Andrea della Valle

These Roman churches are just amazing. You really get the feel for how Rome invested their money and power into temples/churches.

Around Town

I have a video of the cello musician. He was really good! Will try to get those videos up in the next post.

Shinny Things

A Great View

A Cool Elephant Sculpture

The Trevi Fountain

I got a video of this guy doing his thing. Will post it in the next post along with other videos.

That’s it folks. Our trip to Rome is wrapped up. We even watched the Audrey Hepburn movie Roman Holiday which had a lot of sites from our week long visit.
