On Our Way To Lido

This is a photo right outside of our AirBnB apartment. Nice neighborhood!

Venice is surrounded by many islands on all sides. Lido is the island that we focused on trying to get to this evening. One of our goals with our trip to Venice was to take the opportunity to visit the surrounding islands. After all we payed something like $300 bucks to get unlimited rides for the month on the network of water taxis, so might as well take advantage of it.

In our time in Venice we visited islands: Murano, Burano + Mazzorbo, Giudecca, Lido, San Giorgio Maggiore, and San Michele Cemetery Island.

Lido

We made it!

The entrance to the main beach.

Lido was pretty underwhelming. For one there are cars there (a big turnoff). It looked like a spring break college student hub without the college students in the winter, ie – not much going on. It did actually have a beach though! We both stepped our toes into the Mediterranean water there.

I wasn’t so hip on being on a dark beach at night with no one around. I was worried that we’d be looked at as two foreign travelers who didn’t know the language or anything about anything on some dark beach in the middle of nowhere! So we cut the experience shorter than K would have liked. I was a firm “no” on a beach stroll on this very dark island.

It did remind me of the time that someone tried to steal K’s camera on her photo shoot in a dark alley at night (just me and her) about 20 years ago back when I was about 240lbs of solid muscle (or at least more than I am now lol). He was going in for the grab and I yelled “How’s it going?’ right at that critical moment. He instantly stopped! And pretended that he was just walking down a dead end dark alley at night with a blood red hoody covering a face that seemed like was covered in pantyhose, smoking a cigarette. He definitely had style! So we got to say “Hi” again as he walked back out of the “dead-end”. Yeah I was getting that same feeling here on the beach. Not sure I ever told anyone that story before… I’ve got tons of ’em though. K’s always keeping us doing something 🙂 (as you can see).

Back To Venice

I bet this place gets REALLY spooky during heavy mists

Venice at night on a water taxi is like riding through a life-sized version of Pirates of the Caribbean. I loved it!

We never did do a gondola ride. It’s a real racket, they’re all unionized LOL! A 30 minute ride in their boat was like $110 bucks! If I were to do it I’d definitely stay away from the main canal. the smaller side canals are probably a much more enjoyable time. The main canal can be loaded with motor boat traffic and would be a totally unnerving experience (for me anyways).
