We’ve walked past this building several times so you’ve probably noticed it here-and-there, BUT on this day we actually went through it. They have a lot of great art there! I got toooo many pictures (as usual), so I’ll break this into two posts just to keep things manageable.

When In Rome

First stop the Roman wing

Many of these art pieces are actually murals from Roman temples in Spain (I think). They have a quite labor intensive and chemistry-based process to peel these murals off of the surfaces they were originally painted on, mostly church/temple walls. They actually take the peeled mural artwork and reapply it like wallpaper onto an exactly identically shaped surface. Therefore they have a ton of side chapels of various sizes, and walls with random columns interspersed through the exhibit.

I think some of these murals are over 1500 years old! In addition I think some of them are Romanesque with an original Spanish influence. Spain moved towards Spanish Gothic in the medieval times. Yet, before that early Romanesque pieces were common in Spain.

As I’m writing this we’re actually in Rome. Just down the street from the Coliseum in fact! It feels a bit strange to be in Rome while I’m writing a blog post about an adventure last month in Barcelona about Roman art 🙂

Bring Me the Gothic Art!

They’ve spent a huge amount of effort on the presentation. Impressive to see
